Top 5 outfits from the MET and their significance

This year, the Met Gala was held on 2nd May 2022, where millions of people on social media awaited in anticipation to see what outfits their favorite celebrities were boasting on the red carpet.

The theme this year was a continuation of last year’s, “In America: An Anthology in Fashion”, where designers worked with a contraction of the theme, “Gilded Glamor”. All the outfits had to be inspired by the years 1870 – 1900.

Blake Lively

Blake Lively was one of the hosts for the event and she did not disappoint. She walked the carpet wearing a Versace Atelier Gown. When she entered, the dress had a copper bow at the hip that led into a long, dramatic, mint green train. The crown that adorned her head had 7 tiers and 25 stones embedded into it, and was a direct tribute to the Statue of Liberty, much like the rest of her outfit. The 7 tiers in her crown are tied back to the 7 rays on the Statue and the stones represent the 25 windows on the structure.

When asked, Lively said that her inspiration for the outfit was drawn directly from the architecture of New York City and the historical buildings that decorate the skyline there. Her outfit had elements that represented the Empire State Building and the constellation similar to the one at Grand Central station.

Lizzo

Lizzo attended the 2022 Met Gala in a black gown and oversized coat designed by Thom Browne. The coat took 22,000 hours to create and was adorned with hand-embroidered gold threads. Accompanying this outfit was a rare flute worth 55,000 dollars. The artist was definitely on point in correspondence to the theme of the ball.

Genesis Suero

Genesis Suero won the hearts of everyone on social media, many even going so far as to name her best dressed. Who is she? She arrived at the Gala as a news anchor for the Spanish-language broadcaster Telemundo instead of being an invited celebrity. She is also a former Miss New York USA winner.

The beautiful dress Suero wore was designed by New York-based designer Lucia Rodriguez.

Cardi B

Cardi B showed up in a striking Versace gold-embroidered outfit in a matching Barocco-print convertible. Almost a kilometer of gold chains was used for the creation of this outfit.

The embroidery took over 1,300 hours and 20 different people to get the dress ready for the event.

Conan Gray

In 2018, Conan Gray sent out a tweet stating, “if I ever get to go to the met gala I solemnly swear to not wear a bland ass black tuxedo unless the theme is distinctly ‘bland ass black tuxedo’”.

…And he didn’t. Conan Grey wore Valentino on the red carpet just as he did at Coachella. These boots were made for Gray to walk in them and that’s just what they did. The Valentino Garavani platform boots were created by Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli.

Some of this year's outfits didn’t live up to the expectations everyone had for their favorite celebrities, but in my opinion, these 5 stood out the most among the crowd and were completely by the theme. They all had unique aspects in their outfits that made the audience scream with delight. Despite this, my favorite part of the gala was Suero’s outfit in general. Her outfit truly embraced the fashion of the gilded age and stole the heart of many fans viewing the gala online. These outfits were fantastic while truly serving the theme and we can’t wait to see what the designers have in store for 2023!
